Vietnam’s financial sector is undergoing significant transformation to meet rising digital demand. Customers now expect banking services that are instant, reliable, and secure across mobile and online channels. Traditional systems, built on fixed infrastructure, often struggle to match this scale and speed. Hardware limits make upgrades slow, and downtime can disrupt essential services.

Cloud banking changes this. By shifting data and processes to virtual infrastructure, banks gain flexible servers that scale automatically, real-time updates that improve service delivery, and built-in recovery that reduces outages. The cloud also allows banks to store large volumes of data securely while keeping costs predictable. These features support faster innovation, better risk management, and improved customer trust.
As Vietnam accelerates its digital transformation, cloud banking is no longer optional, it is becoming the backbone that supports new services, advanced security, and future-ready financial operations.
Vietnam is moving fast in its digital transformation. More than 80 percent of adults own smartphones. Around 87 percent hold a payment account. Mobile payment use doubles each year. Digital banking revenue is expected to top $1 billion soon. Meanwhile e-commerce may hit $15.4 billion by 2025. Card use is low, just 3 percent, but growing.
Banks face pressure to keep up. Fintech firms push new experiences. Customers demand speed, ease, and security. Many banks struggle with old systems that are slow to update or scale. That’s where cloud banking steps in. A good cloud solution lets banks experiment, add features, and scale securely.
Many institutions now run parts of their core systems on the cloud or in hybrid setups. In 2024, Vietnam International Bank (VIB) became the first to run the Temenos R23 core banking system on AWS cloud and its private cloud. This gives them better security, smoother operations, and less cost during peak demand.
ABBANK also moved half its IT services to a hybrid cloud with Google Cloud’s Anthos platform, built in collaboration with Cloud Ace and CMC Telecom. This helped lower total cost and speed delivery of their digital services like AB Ditizen.
VPBank migrated 28 applications to AWS in just 11 months. They reported performance scaling up from 6 percent to 42 percent, and optimized costs by 51 percent. Over 2,000 staff received AWS training to drive cloud fluency.
Cloud banking is powering fintech technology in Vietnam too. TNEX, the first digital-only bank, built on Mambu’s API-first cloud platform via AWS. This approach lets TNEX launch in phases, focusing on customer-first design without worrying about infrastructure.
PVcomBank teamed with Vemanti to create a digital-banking platform built using cloud computing, APIs, AI, machine learning, and blockchain. This solution targeted SMEs and under-banked groups, while still allowing access to physical branches.
In open banking, Brankas and Vilja are helping banks adopt cloud-native, composable core systems with secure open APIs. This supports compliance with the State Bank of Vietnam’s rules issued in March 2025 and helps modernize banking infrastructure.
Cloud banking unlocks new ideas. With scalable infrastructure, banks can offer features like real-time analytics, AI-driven fraud detection, or hyper-personalized interfaces, all without heavy investment in hardware.
Cloud lets them run sandbox pilots, test embedded services, or partner with fintechs. Open API frameworks mean new services can plug in fast. Data remains secure and compliant under frameworks shaped by the central bank and government. And backing by cloud vendors like AWS or Google ensures uptime and global standards.
